LME: the Label Management Environment

The LME is a tool specifically for the creation and maintenance of quality labels and it is aimed at people who are reasonably knowledgeable about labels such as Labelling Authority employees who assess web sites and resources or domain experts who work in very specific subject areas, for example academics at universities. Its underlying technology infrastructure is based on the label management component of the AQUA environment and allows the user to access one or more predefined vocabularies (i.e. one or more quality labels schemes) for use in creating new labels and updating existing labels. It incorporates searching functionalities in order to locate described web resources (either by title or by domain name) and review the descriptions associated with them or create new descriptions following the labeling schemes. The application is easily expandable with respect to the vocabularies provided to the users as well as the formats on which the labeling information can be extracted. It currently supports the creation of labels expressed in RDF-CL and the POWDER format.

QSN: the Quality Social Network

The QSN is a Social Network Application with an added dimension – quality labels. The QSN has all the standard features of a Social Network such as registration, user profiles, message exchange and building of connections with other members. Additionally, the QSN allows members to collect and store (anonymously) both user-defined labels for Web resources and user-defined ratings of third-party labels. The latter will be aggregated to provide end users with an indication of reliability of existing labels. User defined labels can be shared with all the other members within the QSN, as are the ratings, depending on the permission levels set by the individual user. The QSN has been tested by the Greek, Dutch and Czech Safer Internet Youth Panels.

LADI+: the Search Engine Wrapper

LADI+ is a search tool that annotates results from major search engines with information about related content and quality labels. Content and quality labels are descriptions of Web pages, which provide information about their content and/or characteristics. The availability of such information in search engine results is useful if any users wish to know about the content of a Web site, its authoritativeness and reliability before visiting the site itself. Where a label does exist the result is marked with a blue shield icon (see Figure 2). To see the label information for a result that is marked with such an icon users can click on the icon and a new, "popup" window will appear where LADI+ renders the labelling information in a human-readable presentation.
LADI+ for Mozilla Firefox
To use LADI+ from the Mozilla Firefox browser, install the GreaseMonkey add-on and then obtain and enable the LADI+ script.
LADI+ for Internet Explorer
To use LADI+ from the Internet Explorer browser install the Trixie script engine, and copy the LADI+ for IE script in the Scripts folder of the Trixie installation (e.g inside C:\Program Files\Bhelpuri\Trixie\Scripts).
For detailed instructions, you can read the LADI+ User Manual
ViQ+: the Quality Visualizer
The Quality Visualizer (ViQ+)is a client application in charge of two main tasks:
- To notify users whether a requested Web resource is associated with content labels or not.
- To display to the users the contents of the labels associated with Web Resources.

ViQ+ is implemented on top of the GreaseMonkey script engine, a framework that is compatible with almost every major modern browser. ViQ+ re-renders the content of the page the user is visiting and annotates it with a bar indicating the presence or absence of a content/quality label for this page and an active icon. One the user clicks on the icon, the labelling information associated with the page is presented to him/her.
ViQ+ for Mozilla Firefox
To use ViQ+ from the Mozilla Firefox browser, install the GreaseMonkey add-on and then obtain and enable the ViQ+ script.
ViQ+ for Internet Explorer
To use ViQ+ from the Internet Explorer browser install the Trixie script engine, and copy the ViQ+ for IE script in the Scripts folder of the Trixie installation (e.g inside C:\Program Files\Bhelpuri\Trixie\Scripts).

QLS: The QSN Label Sniffer

The QSN Label Sniffer (QLS) is a client application aiming to exploit the labelling information generated by the QSN members. When a user is visiting a web page, QLS spots links to other web resources present in the page and contacts QUAPRO+ to retrieve QSN labels for these resources. The presence of a label is then communicated to the user via an appropriate icon. In that way, the user can be aware of the quality of the resource as expressed by the QSN community, before he/she actually visits the resource.

QUATRO+ and the Software 602 Groupware Server

The Groupware Server, a product of Software 602, incorporates two applications of the QUATRO Plus technologies, the e-mail annotator and the semantic proxy. The e-mail annotator searches for URLs inside the body of an e-mail message. It communicate with QUAPRO Plus, implementing the relevant WSDL specification, in order to receive labels for the resources corresponding to the discovered URLs, and extends the content of the message with an icon in order to provide customized information about the addresses found in the message. The Semantic Proxy exploits labelling information and the content analysis provided by Filter-X in order to customize access for the users of the Groupware 602 Server application. Users of the platform are encouraged to communicate with the members of the Consortium and get informed on the new modules.
QUARPO+: the QUATRO+ Proxy
QUAPRO+ is the central server-based application which receives requests from its end-user applications (like ViQ+, LADI+ and the QSN), identifies labels, evaluates them with respect to the databases of the corresponding labelling authorities (LA) and replies accordingly. The QUAPRO+ set of web services are responsible for discovering, evaluating and processing labelling authorities’ trustmarks, expressed in the RDF-CL or the POWDER protocol. A Data Access interface (DAcc), placed before an LA’s database, handles the communication between QUAPRO+ and the database. Based on the results returned by the DAccs, QUAPRO+ composes a description for the relevant resource, which is returned to the clients along with details about the provenance and authenticity of the data. The communication is carried out using the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) with output available in POWDER, RDF-CL, HTML and plain text formats. The output can then be used from the calling application to display messages, icons, annotations or perform certain actions based on the label content retrieved by QUAPRO+. Furthermore, QUATRO+ communicates via SOAP with the QSN (see section 3.2) to retrieve the aggregated label for a web resource, which is based on the collective descriptions of the QSN members. The QSN label is available to every client as it happens with the labels created by the authorities.
